What’s in my Carry On? 2016

I can’t believe a year has passed since I last did one of these. To see the 2015 version click here. Welcome to what’s in my carry on 2016! To start the bag is a Fjallraven Kanken in brown (or dark green I’m not sure honestly). I’ve had it for half a year and am still loving it! I love that it has two big pockets on the sides for water and an umbrella. The fact that I can hold it like a shopping bag but also wear it on my back is a big plus. If I was going to buy a new one though I’d go for the ‘laptop’ specific one as it comes with thicker, more comfortable straps.

The first things in my carry on are the essentials. I have my phone, wallet, camera, passport and headphones. I do own over the ear headphones but when I’m travelling I like to use simple earbuds as they take up less space. I’ll also make sure I have a phone charger handy as nowadays most planes/trains have outlets to charge on. I’ll also take note of where I’m travelling and bring the adapter just in case I need it immediately when I land.

Something a little stranger is that I carry a bag within my carry on bag. It’s a basic pouch/sack and then attached to the drawstring is a carabiner. When I’m sitting for a long time I like to take out all the junk from my pockets or my coat and dump it in here. Then I clip it in my bag or on the seat in front and have easy access to it all. It’s also handy to put loose change, pens, plasters etc. instead of rummaging and making a mess.

A new addition since last year is this eye mask. I found out that when I ‘turn off’ my senses I sleep really good on transport haha. So I now always carry an eye mask and ear plugs to switch myself off. Naturally I went for black as I’m a very boring person (although the pouch bag above is bright blue, crazy). Then here’s also my wooden fellow from New Zealand. I talked more about him last year so I won’t repeat myself but yup he still travels with me everywhere I go!

Snacks and water are obviously super duper important! You never know what options there will be at airports or train stations. Sometimes there are great, healthy places but the most likely scenario will be a Burger King or a news agent. I like to carry energy bars or dried fruit as something to munch until I can buy something more substantial or get my free meal on the plane. You’re allowed to carry empty bottles through security so I always do that and then fill them up from the water fountain on the other side (handy tip there). Toiletries wise I have deodorant, moisturiser and eye drops – the essentials to make myself seem like a normal human being after travelling. Tissues are always great (last year I had One Direction ones and this year funky geometric from Tiger), and then chewing gum to avoid my ears popping and chapstick!

Books on books on books. I have two notebooks I use pretty much everyday, one’s a journal/planner and the other is my list/organiser. I should go digital but there’s something satisfying about physically writing down a task and crossing it off for me. Reading wise I always have a travel guide of where I’m going and I can’t highly enough recommend Wallpaper City Guides (I’ll be doing a post about them soon actually). Then entertainment wise apart from my iPad, I am currently reading Trainspotting and boy it’s juicy.

Last thing to mention that isn’t technically in my carry on but I always wear them now when I’m travelling are my Blundstones. They are so god damn comfortable and easy to slip on/off for security. I also realised that they take up a lot of space in my luggage so to wear them makes the most sense.

And that’s that! Some new members to the club and a lot of loyal patrons. I guess other things to mention would be a jumper as planes tend to get cold and also my computer if I’m going away for a while. Basic stuff right? I hope you are having a wonderful hump day and see you this weekend!
