I love travelling but I also love people. Therefore when I find a project that combines that two I instantly get excited and interested. If you’ve been around a while you’ll know I take part in a mail exchange service called Postcrossing. I did a post on it quite a while back now and you simply swap postcards around the world with strangers. Today I want to talk about something similar but with personalised letters (note the snail mail in the title).
The basics of this project is to write an email to a loved one, friend, whoever you want and submit it on their site. They then assign it to a volunteer artist who will draw/write up your email and physically mail it to the recipient. It used to be that mail was the norm and emails were exciting, but now our inboxes are full everyday and getting a personalised letter through the post is a pure thrill. Your assignee will then receive this special letter and hopefully be pretty chuffed haha. As it is so popular there are now specific times in the year they run the submissions and then you just send it to the site Snail Mail My Email.
As a creative type myself I think it’s a really neat idea and very sweet. With texting and even calling we lose that bit of intimacy. Knowing someone has taken the time to write or doodle a letter is really special (especially as it’s a stranger all together haha). They released a book to get a feel of some of the effort these artists go to – it’s also fascinating to read the kind of letters people want sent out but I’m just nosey. It’s a really cool community art project that expands all seven continents and is constantly getting more traction and growing. Why not go check it out and see what you think? I believe the next round of submissions will be 2016 but if you want to sign up as an artist you can do that year round!
