To end this trip chapter, here is a review of WestJet. They are a low-cost airline and the second largest airline in Canada. Our flight with them was a little cheaper but sketchier to book as their website system is dated. I think they could definitely do with re-branding themselves and getting a whole refresh but I guess the fact that they haven’t yet is why they can manage to be pretty affordable?
We flew on a Boeing 737-600 which was a 3 seat, aisle, 3 seat layout. For me the whole experience with them was much better than Air Canada. It started from check in at the terminal and the man edited our seat reservations so we would get a whole row to ourselves. He was just a genuinely nice person to deal with and customer service is always important! They lack in the details and decor / truly the whole unified package but they make up for it by having such fun and helpful staff (at least that we dealt with).
The leg room was pretty normal for such a small plane but as we had the extra seat between us we were able to spread out more. Food wise was a little disappointing as there wasn’t anything uniquely ‘WestJet’. They gave out the usual drinks and then branded chocolate wafers and little crackers. As you know I like it when things are custom (I guess that’s the designer in me) so I felt a little bummed out about that.
They had very small seatback units which felt pretty dated. It wasn’t a custom-pick entertainment system, instead it was just regular TV that you flicked through with a control unit on your armrest. We didn’t really use it as the flight was so short but maybe on their larger planes they have a better system?
The part that made this flight extra special for me was our air steward. When we landed and were taxiing to the gate she sang us a song haha. It was to the tune of Favourite Things from Sound of Music but she had changed the words to relate to WestJet and flying. It was a really surreal moment and everyone was looking around at each other confused. It definitely put a smile on my face and I truly believe the little things and attitudes that people have can really take an experience from a good one to an amazing one. Melissa the air steward – you were a superstar.
That ends up my Canada/roadtrip/Easter trip. I just got back from Tennessee so expect to see the start of that either this Sunday or next week and I hope you all have a great rest of April!
