What’s in my Carry On? 2015

For this week I wanted to do a theme and it’s all about luggage! I have no idea how interesting/helpful these posts will be but I think people just like a good snoop. This one is all about what I take in my carry on bag and then on Sunday I’ll be posting a tip/tricks on how I pack my checked bag. Going on a trip should be relaxing and enjoyable, so if you can get over these horrible time constraints of packing and organising your bags it makes it that much easier.

Ok so first off is the bag itself. I tend to switch it up between two – the Herschel Nelson Backpack or the Ben Sherman Double-Zip Commuter Bag depending on my mood. Sometimes I want to just fling it on my back and not worry about the weight and other times I want to look like a business man haha. Both of them have lots of space and neat little pockets to hold small items. I think just find a bag you’re comfortable with (and it also helps if it can fit under the seat infront of you for easy access during the flight). You will sense a slight theme that I do like the colour black by the way haha.

Next let’s go with the boring essentials like my phone, wallet, passport, camera and iPod. The first two I tend to actually keep in my pockets with the latter in a front pocket of the bag/somewhere I can grab them quick. Before I go I normally separate my currencies (if I’m going somewhere abroad) so when I land I’ll be able to easily pay for anything right away. That’s why I tend to have two wallets, the brown one is bigger and holds coins where as my black one is just a card wallet from Topman. I normally have a passport case but my current one is all sticky and gross so I’m looking for a new one. I’ll probably end up buying it from Etsy so I’ll keep you posted. I also always have a hat in my bag as after a several hour flight I might feel gross and just want to hide under a cap (most of the time this is the case).

This next item might seem a little weird but it has a good story – it’s a tekoteko statue. I was on a Maori tour in New Zealand in like 2011 and just as we were leaving this lady pulled me aside and told me that I needed luck in my future. It honestly felt like something out of a scary movie except it was in the middle of the day and I was surrounded by tourists with bum bags. She gave me this statue and told me to keep it with me always. Now it sits by my bed each night and whenever I travel it comes with me. I’m certain it’s all superstition but there’s nothing wrong with giving in to that sometimes right?

Not for the keeping me busy items. Obviously it depends on the airline as some have seatback TVs wahey but I always bring this stuff along to work. My journal is important so that I know where I’m going/what I’m doing haha and it’s a Moleskine. I know most people carry around notebooks to jot things down but I like to use post its, there’s something more flexible about them for me at least. That weird cardboard thing is my iPad. I made these cardboard stands so that it can sit up easy on desks/tray tables when I’m watching a movie or typing. And although I do have an iPad I hate reading books on it so I always have some kind of physical book for when I get tired of doing work – right now Harry Potter oh yeah.

I try not to be ‘that guy’ with so much crap in his bag but I do take a few toiletries with me. I get dry on airplanes really fast and I find moisturising and eye drops help me feel more awake when I’m about to land. In there is the Simple moisturiser, some eye drops, Aleve painkillers, wipes and One Direction tissues (because who doesn’t want to use those?). Sometimes I’ll also pack my toothbrush if it’s a super long flight. Gum is a necessity for me for take off and landing as my ears will explode otherwise. My plastic bag thing is from Muji and was super cheap and it’s just nicer to handle than those sandwich bag things they supply you at the airport.

The last part really depends on who I am flying with. Some airlines don’t have as great an entertainment system or supply food. Therefore at the airport I’ll tend to buy some sort of snack and maybe an additional magazine. I think I’m pretty basic when it comes to what I bring on the plane with me. I know some people take on pillows and xyz lotions and every electronic they own. For me it’s just about keeping myself busy and staring out the window thinking ‘holy crap I’m flying in the air’ haha. A great tip is to also make some sort of playlist, music in the best when staring out windows!
