This is part two of Austin and is all about food glorious food! The first mention has to be a BBQ joint as that is pretty much the crowning glory of Texas. Everywhere claims to have the best so deciding where to go was a hard decision but we opted for Ruby’s BBQ in West Campus. They do a platter deal and we all went for different things – ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The decor seemed pretty authentic (or at least looked pretty legit) and the service was friendly. Their banana pudding is really nice as well which is always a plus! I’m sure everywhere in TX does good BBQ so if you can’t make it here just make sure you get BBQ at some point!
Another food spot to check out is Amy’s Ice Creams. There are a bunch of different locations and they all have staple flavours and then mix up some unique ones. I’m a big ice cream guy so this was a definite highlight! I went for the Big Boy Breakfast and Banana Puddin’ and they were both delicious (but I mean when is ice cream ever bad?).
Another Southern ‘specialty’ is Whataburger (apparently you pronounce it as ‘what a bur-gur’ but my friend might have just been messing with me). As far as I’m aware it’s the In-N-Out/Shake Shack equivalent but with a more fast food vibe. Their portions are huge so be wary when you order as it’s very wholesome and filling.
There is a huge selection of different food styles and cuisines in Austin so no matter what you’re craving they probably have it. Drinks wise check out the downtown area and walk around 6th street for a bunch of different bars and cowboy joints yeeha.
