Lisbon Day #3 – Tiles and Trams

I am currently sitting in Pushcart Coffee in NYC as I write this blog post. I feel very ‘New York’ on my laptop sipping an iced coffee surrounded by other professionals on their computers looking equally as immersed. I’ve lived here almost three years now and have never felt as cool as I do right now haha. Anyway here we go –
Our third and final day was spent exploring the downtown area of Lisbon. We started by heading to Rossio Square which is one of the main squares of the city. It has a huge monument of Pedro IV – a past King of Portugal. The majority of Lisbon has Portuguese pavements which are very square/grid based but here it is in a wave pattern. Rossio is a great meeting point / place to start your day as it is in the centre of downtown. From here you can go down different sidestreets and truly get lost in the city. There are also a lot of English speaking restaurants surrounding it and gift shops so it’s the major tourist spot.
From there we wandered around and got lost for awhile. Lisbon is the perfect city to do this in as it isn’t too big but there are many hidden alleys and beautifully styled streets to explore. Then we ended up at a tram stop and decided to hop on one that was heading uphill. The trams in Lisbon accept metro cards so it’s very convenient, however they are small and very compact so you’ll get to know your neighbour really well as they bump into you with every turn. It’s a classic method of transport and something that keeps Lisbon timeless.
I’m not quite sure what the area was called but we got off the tram at the top of a big hill by the castle. It was there that we found a stunning view of the water and a birds eye view of the terracotta houses. It’s views like this that are quintessentially Western Europe oppose to like Sweden or Wales.
We headed up towards Castelo de Sao Jorge but opted to not ‘really’ look around. I mean we wandered through the main gates and round the immediate area but didn’t go inside anywhere. Instead we got some lunch nearby and kept moving as time wasn’t on our side. If you have a spare hour or two you should check it out though (and then let me know what we missed out on). Instead we kept heading east and came across the National Pantheon purely by chance. This is what I meant about just walking round the city and taking turns/corners that intrigue you. I’m really glad we found this place as it was insanely cheap to go in and was completely empty and peaceful (the view wasn’t half bad either as you could go on the roof!).
Our final stop before heading to the airport was the Museu Nacional do Azulejo aka the Lisbon Tile Museum. I’m a big fan of patterns and so getting to see different tiled patterns all in one place was a must see! Although the actual museum is kind of far out of the way (you can bus there) and not the most exciting, it is a great picture opportunity! So here are just some of my favourites –

Overall I would definitely recommend a trip to Lisbon to anyone! Be prepared to walk and drink a lot of red wine/eat lots of pastries. Hopefully these last three posts have been inspiring and you go check out the beauty of Lisboa!
